During a youth match, Zhang Zhijie, 17, lost consciousness and collapsed to the ground. A hospital later declared him deceased.
Widely circulated footage of the incident revealed a 40-second gap before emergency personnel hurried to Zhang’s aid.
Rapid medical attention might have saved his life, and officials have come under fire for it.
Later on, the Indonesian badminton body reported that he had passed away unexpectedly.
Zhang was competing against Kazuma Kawano of Japan in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships match that was played on Sunday in the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta.
A man is seen rushing to Zhang’s aid when he collapses, but he appears to stop dead in his tracks and glance off court for more guidance.
Subsequently, a PBSI representative informed reporters that medical crews were required to adhere to a regulation requiring their permission to enter the court from the referee.
He stated, “That is in line with the rules and procedural standards that apply to every international badminton tournament.”
Zhang was brought to an ambulance in less than two minutes, according to Badminton Asia, the regional organization of the Badminton World Federation, the sport’s regulatory body.
