The chief inspector of prisons conducted an inspection of HMP Lewes and discovered that “safe risk management” is being compromised.
The results, which were made public on Tuesday, came from a thorough inspection conducted in February at the East Sussex prison; however, a comparable report on the Chelmsford prison, which was released last week, also outlined some of the same issues.
According to the authorities, anyone serving terms longer than four years and those convicted of major crimes like terrorism or sexual offenses are not eligible for early release.
However, this Lewes examination turned up a case of a prisoner whose release date was advanced under the early release scheme even though it was determined that he posed a “risk to children” and had a history of stalking, domestic abuse, and being the target of a restraining order.
