Reeves has promised to reduce debt as a percentage of national income by the conclusion of this parliament and to refrain from borrowing to pay for daily expenses.
The chancellor must decide whether to increase borrowing, raise taxes, or reduce public spending, Sir John Gieve told the BBC.
Reeves recently arrived in China for a three-day trip with the goal of strengthening commercial and trade relations.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said it was “absolutely right and proper” that the chancellor went and took seriously the UK’s relationship with China, the world’s second largest economy, despite opposition parties calling for her to cancel the trip after the pound dropped to its lowest level in more than a year and borrowing costs increased.
