Pakistan’s political heavyweights, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), are working together to reform the country’s electoral system.
The coordination committee, which includes representatives of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has begun work to fix the shortcomings in the electoral process.
Recognizing the limitations of the supervisory system during elections, both parties have begun to propose legislation aiming at electoral reform.
A crucial concept gaining support is the potential elimination of caretaker arrangements entirely. Under this scenario, the current government would remain in power until new elections are called.
This method is inspired by systems in place in India and Bangladesh, where the Prime Minister monitors the electoral process.Under the proposed reforms, the Prime Minister will have direct oversight of the general elections, similar to the systems in India and Bangladesh. Furthermore, the PML-N and PPP have stated a willingness to work with other political parties to achieve broader consensus on the proposed reforms.
