The horrific Karsaz explosion, one of the deadliest terrorist strikes in Pakistan’s political history, occurred 17 years ago today.
At least 180 persons were killed and nearly 500 injured when suicide bombers struck a motorcade transporting former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Karachi on October 18, 2007. After eight years of self-imposed exile, Bhutto returned to Pakistan, where she and her followers became the target of the bombing.
The attack was a severe blow to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and a somber reminder of the unstable security situation in the nation at the time. It happened just two months before Bhutto was assassinated.
