KARACHI: Journalist Farhan Mallick has been placed under physical remand for four days by a port city judicial magistrate and turned over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
A day earlier, the journalist was arrested by the FIA on charges of defamation and violation of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca).
Journalists across have been protesting the controversial Peca law, which was recently revised. They claim that the measure is an attempt to restrict free speech and intimidate journalists and their media outlets.
Mallick’s attorney said during today’s sessions at the Judicial Magistrate (East) court that the journalist was already the subject of ongoing investigations and that the Sindh High Court had earlier issued directives prohibiting any legal action.
