Minutes after it was announced that a jurist in Rawalpindi had been shot, the police in Rawalpindi refuted reports that shots had been fired at Judge Muhammad Bashir’s car in an accountability court.
Earlier, Geo News reported citing police sources that the jurist survived a gun attack on his vehicle in Rawalpindi.
After a hearing at Adiala jail in Rawalpindi, the judge was reportedly driving home when an armed attacker opened fire on his vehicle close to PAF Chowk, which is under the control of Airport Police Station.
They said that the weapon of crime was also found, and the suspect—a Haley Street resident named Shayan Zulfiqar—was apprehended immediately.
A police spokesperson subsequently stated that Judge Bashir was not the target of the firing; rather, the suspect was pressuring “his relatives” to accompany him, and when they refused, he opened fire in the air. Just moments before the firing, the jurist’s car had driven away from the scene of the incident.
Note that because of security concerns, the judge is presiding over hearings of significant cases at Adiala jail that need in-camera proceedings. Before the incident, he had conducted the hearing of the £190 million case against former prime minister Imran Khan.
