Mark Smith, a second secretary in the British embassy located in Ireland, posted his letter of resignation on the internet.
In it, he states: “Each day we witness clear and unquestionable examples of war crimes and breaches of international humanitarian law in Gaza perpetuated by the state of Israel.”
He also states that “senior members of the Israeli government and military have expressed open genocidal intent” and its “Israeli soldiers take videos deliberately burning, destroying and looting civilian property” .
He thus writes: “After a long career in the diplomatic service, it is with sadness that I resign, but I can no longer perform my duties.”
Israel refers to its actions in Gaza as a “just war” in retaliation for Hamas’s attack on October 7 and disputes any violations of international law.
Benjamin Netanyahu is the subject of an arrest order issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) due to claims that he committed war crimes.
Regarding his treatment of the remaining hostages in Gaza, Mr. Netanyahu, who is being criticized within Israel, stated he “rejects with disgust” the claims.
“No pressure and no decision in any international forum will prevent us from striking those who seek to destroy us,” he stated.
