I was turned away from Banchan the first time I visited because they were out of room. There was just not enough room for a party of two at the completely booked and vacant restaurant. That resolved it. I had to return to see why there was such a commotion. After a span of two weeks, I arrived to the cozy eatery beside the well-known Barbecue Tonight in Karachi – naturally, with a reservation this time.
Inside, the darkly lit space was crowded with patrons as servers seared meat over hot grills. As soon as we made our order, a platter of banchan, or side dishes, was placed on our table. The restaurant claims that serving diners with a variety of complimentary banchan is traditional in South Korea. The banchan had the well-known Korean kimchi, as well as what looked to be onion kimchi, spicy radish salad (musaengchae), seasoned cabbage, seasoned mung bean sprouts, and a dipping sauce made of soy sauce.
