Ms. San Miguel is an outspoken opponent of the administration of President Nicolás Maduro.
The prosecutor general, a strong supporter of Mr. Maduro, has accused her of being involved in a purported plan to assassinate the president.
She is being held in secret locations along with five of her relatives who have also been taken into custody.
Juan González, a member of her legal team, claimed that five of her family members were missing and and his inquiries for information were not being answered by the authorities.
Prosecutor-General Tarek William Saab announced on X, the previous Twitter platform, on Monday that Ms. San Miguel had appeared before a tribunal and was facing charges including “treason, conspiracy, and terrorism”.
She was implicated, according to him, in a plot to assassinate the president. He said that the “conspiracy” had planned to assassinate President Maduro and other prominent figures in addition to targeting multiple military outposts in San Cristóbal.
The reason behind the detention of her daughter, her ex-husband, and three other family members is unknown.
“Anyone who is emotionally attached” to Ms. San Miguel, according to Mr. González, was being detained.
