According to US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, American schoolteacher Marc Fogel was on his way to the United States after being released from a Russian prison.
Without giving any further information, Waltz stated in a statement that negotiations with Russia had led to Mr. Fogel’s release.
Waltz promised that by Tuesday evening, Mr. Fogel will return to the United States and be reunited with his family.
In 2021, Mr. Fogel, 63, was taken into custody at an airport for unlawfully possessing cannabis.
He received a 14-year prison sentence after being accused of possessing a minor quantity of medical marijuana that had been prescribed in the United States.
Mr. Fogel, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, taught at the Moscow Anglo-American School.
