On Tuesday night, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol imposed martial law and ordered the arrest of Han Dong-hoon, the leader of his own ruling party.
According to the deputy director of the National Intelligence Service, the arrest list also contained three opposition politicians and Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the main opposition Democratic Party.
Director Hong Jang-won claimed that the president attempted to “use this chance to arrest them and wipe them out.”
The disclosure was made at emergency sessions of the nation’s political parties on Friday, during which members of parliament intended to introduce a motion to remove Yoon from office. The motion, which is scheduled for Saturday, will pass if two-thirds of MPs vote for it.
