KARACHI: Pakistan’s automotive sector saw a stark contrast in sales in February, with passenger car sales soaring year on year despite a large drop in sales for the fiscal year to date, according to The News.
According to the latest figures from the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), car sales increased by 118% year on year to 7,953 vehicles in February 2024, up from 3,642 units the previous year.
However, the increase in sales contrasts with a 41% decrease in sales for the first eight months of the fiscal year, with only 46,417 units sold vs 78,575 units during the same period in FY23.
In February 2024, sales increased by 2% month on month compared to 7,802 units sold in January 2024. In February, sales of cars with 1300cc or more increased by 39% over the same month last year to 3,941 units.
Meanwhile, sales of 1,000cc cars in February this year were 456 units (320 Suzuki Cultus and 136 Suzuki Wagon R), compared to 165 units in the same month last year.
The sale of automobiles under 1,000 cc increased by 4.6 times, to 3,556 units, compared to 635 units the previous year. In February 2024, Suzuki Alto sales increased to 3,373 units, up from 544 units the previous year.
