According to satellite imaging analysis by the UK-based non-profit research group Open Source Centre, Russia is thought to have sent over a million barrels of oil to North Korea since March of this year.
According to top academics, including UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Pyongyang has supplied Moscow troops and weapons to support its war in Ukraine in exchange for the oil.
These transfers are in violation of UN sanctions that prohibit nations from supplying oil to North Korea, even in modest amounts, in an effort to suppress its economy and stop it from acquiring nuclear weapons.
More than a dozen distinct North Korean oil ships are seen arriving at an oil facility in Russia’s Far East in the satellite photos, which were only made available to the media.
