The crescent of the new lunar month, which signifies the start of the holy month of Ramadan, was sighted Friday, according to Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbors, including the United Arab Emirates.
The Saudi Supreme Court declared that the holy month of Ramadan will start on March 1 (Saturday) after the crescent moon was sighted on Friday night.
Qatar and the United Arab Emirates joined Saudi Arabia in announcing the sighting of the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of Ramadan.
Following Saudi Arabia’s proclamation, Ramadan is observed in a number of Muslim nations.
According to AFP, the UAE, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, and Syria also declared that Ramadan will begin on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the country’s leading cleric, declared Sunday would mark the start of the holy month.
