In 1996, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Yousaf Raza Gillani filed phone-tapping review petitions with the Supreme Court’s constitutional bench.
The decision may have an effect on a number of ongoing cases, Justice Jamal Mandokhel stressed.
Another attorney general described the 2013 statute that permits ISI and IB to tap phones under court supervision.
According to Justice Mazhar, the legislation did not allow anyone to tap phones. Justice Mazhar asked whether a judge was designated to approve phone tapping.
Notices were sent to the advocate generals, and the case was adjourned.
The situation
On January 29, 1997, a seven-member Supreme Court of Pakistan bench affirmed the dissolution of the federal government and the National Assembly, as well as the removal of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto as chief executive.
