NEW DELHI: Scientists warn that an alarming rise in fatal lightning strikes in India is being caused by climate change, killing around 1,900 people year in the most populated nation on earth.
A group of academics led by Fakir Mohan University in the eastern state of Odisha reported that between 1967 and 2020, lightning was responsible for an astounding 101,309 deaths, with a dramatic spike between 2010 and 2020.
“The results indicate a steady increase in lightning activity in India, positioning it as a major killer among climate change-induced natural disasters,” it stated.
The research stated that “lightning activity in India is becoming increasingly unpredictable,” even though it only examined data on mortality and not the quantity of hits.
