Beginning at the end of this month, four waves of release will result in the release of about 514 convicts.
Only prisoners serving shorter terms—less than four years—with 180 days or fewer remaining in their sentences will be given consideration for release.
Inmates serving life sentences or those incarcerated for offenses related to terrorism, domestic violence, or sexual assault will be ineligible for the program by default.
Additionally, prison governors will be able to deny the release of any prisoner they believe poses a “immediate risk” to a particular person or group.
Schedule: • First tranche: On June 26 and 27, those who have less than 45 days remaining in their sentence will be freed.
• Tranche two: On July 3 and 4, those who have 45–89 days remaining on their sentence will be released.
• Tranche three: On July 10 and 11, those who have 90–134 days remaining on their sentence will be released.
• Tranche four: July 17 and 18, those who have 135–180 days remaining on their sentence will be released.
Released eligible inmates who are not released within the designated tranche will be released as soon as “as is practicable” prior to the process’s deadline of July 25.
