The minimal unit pricing (MUP) increases from 50p to 65p on Monday.
Price adjustment for the 65p MUP:
- A 700ml bottle of 40% Scotch whisky will cost £18.10 instead of £14.20.
- A 700ml bottle of 37.5% vodka/gin will cost £17.13 instead of £17.07.
- Wine 13%: 750ml bottle will cost £6.34 instead of £4.88.
- Beer 5%: Four 440-milliliter cans will cost £5.72 instead of £4.40.
- Cider 4.5%: Four 440-milliliter cans will cost £5.15 instead of £3.96.
Scotland became the first nation in the world to outlaw the sale of alcohol by stores for less than 50p a unit in 2018.
It was supposed to expire on April 30 as part of a “sunset clause” included in the legislation when it was passed, but it was extended and enhanced with legislative consent.
The MUP targets individuals who drink at “hazardous and harmful” levels in an effort to lower overall community consumption.
MUP does not levy taxes or bring in revenue for the Scottish government. Instead, the licensed premises keep any extra money that comes in.
