The tragic accident near the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, at approximately 6 a.m. local time (11 a.m. UK time) on Friday reportedly caused a traffic backup, which the 27-year-old allegedly tried to avoid.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday after being charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, careless driving, and failure to obey traffic authorities’ signals.
Scheffler was freed at 8:40 a.m. local time (1:40 p.m. UK time) and allowed to return to the golf course for his second round of the PGA Championship, where he is now three strokes behind the leader.
Scheffler told reporters after his round: “It was a hectic scene and a major misunderstanding. My brain is still spinning.
