WASHINGTON—During a contentious dispute on Friday, US President Donald Trump threatened to withhold federal funds from Maine if Democratic Governor Janet Mills did not follow his executive order prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women’s and girls’ sports. Mills responded unflinchingly, “We’ll see you in court.”
Trump brought up his recent executive order prohibiting trans athletes from participating in women’s sports when speaking to Democratic and Republican governors in the White House’s State Dining Room on Friday. Mills then objected when he called on the governor of Maine and asked her if the state would cooperate.
Trump told Mills, “You’re not going to get federal funding, so you better do it.”
