Following the publication of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry’s last phase on Wednesday, housing secretary Angela Rayner stated that the government “has got to make sure that we accelerate remediation”.
The report attributed the fire that claimed 72 lives in the west London building in June 2017 to “decades of failure” in the government and the construction sector, as well as “systematic dishonesty” on the part of cladding and insulation businesses.
“The failures were systemic, absolutely everybody—whether it’s the regulator, whether it’s those who had the materials, whether it’s the government, whether it’s Ms. Rayner said on News’ Breakfast with Kay Burley.”
According to Ms. Rayner, the government would take into account the 58 recommendations included in the report and “ensure that we take all necessary steps to meet those recommendations, and go above and beyond to instill confidence in people.”
She went on, “One of the things that really struck me was that safety had been subordinated to greed and regulations.”
