On Wednesday, a drive-by shooting at Atlanta’s Benjamin E. Mays High School injured at least four pupils.
The gunshot incident occurred in the lower campus parking lot shortly after dismissal. Atlanta Public Schools reported that the youngsters’ injuries were not life-threatening.
The incident, which occurred as children were departing, generated immediate worries about the school’s safety. The Atlanta Public Schools Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue were quick to respond and bring the injured pupils to the hospital.
The school district stated, “The safety and security of our students and staff are paramount.” All after-school events were suspended immediately, and the school district’s police department is currently conducting an investigation.
This tragic occurrence followed a similar one in May, when a 16-year-old was killed in a gunshot near the school campus. However, the prior incident occurred during non-school hours, about 2:30 a.m., and was reported as an unlawful gathering near a school driveway.
The latest drive-by shooting has raised new questions about the safety procedures in place for pupils during critical moments such as dismissal. The Atlanta community is questioning the efficacy of existing security systems and what initiatives may be taken to improve student safety.
As the investigation continues, authorities have yet to reveal critical facts concerning the description of the car used in the shooting.
