It is believed that Maryam Bahez was born as her family traveled through Europe in the hopes of reaching Britain after fleeing Iraqi Kurdistan.
On Thursday night in Wissant, France, she was 40 days old when her parents and their two elder sons boarded a packed ship and sailed for England.
To try to keep the baby dry, they covered her in a black garbage bag. However, just 100 meters into the trip, the dinghy began to take on it.
After the water reached my waist and my pants were soaked, the dinghy exploded, and I’m not sure how it happened, but everyone landed on top of me and my young daughter.
She slid into the water, but I pulled her up. A couple more dropped on us, and then she went into the water again, and I pulled her up again. This time, she slipped out of my grasp, fell into the water a third time, and I lost her.
After identifying the issues, the French coast guard dispatched multiple ships and a helicopter to save 65 people who were either still on board or in the ocean.
