KARACHI: Following an hours-long altercation between law enforcement officers and multiple lawyers at the Gulistan-e-Jauhar Police Station, a station house officer (SHO) was suspended and demoted on Wednesday.
The altercation started when Qadir Rajpar, a senior attorney and member of the Sindh High Court (SHC), arrived at the police station with a client and a court order releasing a car.
Rajpar, however, claimed that the SHO and other employees mistreated him and disregarded the court’s orders. After that, a sizable group of attorneys assembled in front of the station and blocked the street.
The lawyers and police officers got into a fight, with both sides saying they were hurt. According to the police, the lawyers attempted to break into the station, inflicting injuries on a number of personnel.
Conversely, according to the police, someone entered the SHO’s side room wearing normal clothes and without introducing themselves or wearing a lawyer’s attire.
According to the spokesman, the issue at hand was vehicle release, which is outside the purview of SHO. “When asked to leave the room, the person started verbally abusing and said ‘now see how many people will come’.”
He claimed that after a while, many attorneys arrived at the police station and broke through the fence.
