KARACHI: On Friday, the Sindh High Court (SHC) accepted a petition brought by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) to allocate reserved seats in the province for women and minorities.
The party, which was joined by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-affiliated independent candidates who won reserved seats in the February 8 general elections, submitted the application today.
The court granted the PTI-backed party’s plea for an urgent hearing of the appeal due to the gravity of the situation.
On March 4, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared that the PTI-backed SIC was ineligible for the reserved seats for women and minorities.
Following the election body’s decision, the party petitioned the Peshawar High Court (PHC) regarding the reserved seats issue.
On Wednesday, the court banned MPs who had been told of reserved seats denied to the SIC from taking the oath. A stay order prohibiting members from swearing in was also ordered, and ECP was directed to give a response in the case.
