Following a student-led movement that overthrew autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina, there are rising concerns that many victims of the violence may not receive justice.
Victims and their families are concerned about the government’s broad protection provided to demonstrators who took part in the rebellion.
One such instance concerns Shahriar, 16, who was assaulted during the disturbances and is still in a coma. Abdul, his father, fears that because demonstrators are granted immunity, those who caused his son’s injuries will avoid punishment.
After Hasina withdrew into exile on August 5, the violence broke out, causing pandemonium all around. According to reports, the crackdown claimed the lives of around 700 individuals, including Hasina’s Awami League party members and police officials.
