The government has declared that new regulations will impose phone limitations, social media blackouts, and travel bans on suspected people smugglers.
In order to immediately restrict suspects’ activities while the courts evaluate a full order, ministers intend to implement “interim” Serious Crime Prevention Orders (SCPOs).
It follows data indicating that the number of migrants entering over the English Channel in tiny boats increased by 25% to over 7,000 in 2023.
Stronger authority was required to combat the “vile gang networks,” according to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. However, shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp called the measures “laughable” and warned they would not serve as a deterrence.
Suspects may not be permitted to use laptops under the Home Office’s proposed regulations.
