The oil sector is quite concerned about the substantial increase in gasoline and diesel smuggling, which is why the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC) has taken immediate action.
The OCAC issued a warning in a letter to the Ministry of Petroleum and the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) that the growing amount of oil that is being smuggled could result in the permanent closure of domestic oil refineries.
The OCAC emphasized that although anti-smuggling efforts had made a positive impact a few months prior, new reports from other agencies suggest that illicit trafficking is on the rise again.
According to the letter, 20 percent of domestic petroleum product use is made up of the estimated 10 million liters of illicit petroleum products that are consumed in the nation every day.
