ISLAMABAD: During the nation’s general elections in 2024, damaging content and misinformation were widely circulated on social media platforms, and content moderation was not always strictly enforced.
This is the primary conclusion drawn from the most recent report, “Platforms At The Polls: Disinformation, Political Ads & Accountability During The 2024 Pakistan General Elections,” published by the Digital Rights Foundation (DRF).
According to the analysis, which focuses on TikTok, Facebook/Instagram, YouTube, and X (previously Twitter), there is a notable difference between Pakistan and the Global North in how these platforms handle content breaches.
There was an abundance of damaging content on popular social media platforms around the 2024 elections, including deepfake images and an increase in technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) against women in public, including journalists and politicians.
