In the most recent 2025 rankings, South Africa rose from 53rd place in 2024 to 48th, its highest rating on the Henley Passport Index in over a decade.
With South African passport holders now having visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 106 places globally, this development signaled the nation’s increased global mobility.
The accomplishment was praised by South Africa’s home affairs minister, Leon Schreiber, who credited departmental changes.
“As reform takes root at home affairs, our Green Mamba has broken into the top 50 for the first time in a decade, improving from 53rd in the world in 2024 to 48th in 2025,” Schreiber said.
Considered by many to be the most reliable worldwide passport ranking, the Henley Passport Index assesses travel freedom.
