The Oscar-winning film Parasite made South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun famous. He was discovered dead from what appears to have been a suicide.
The 48-year-old actor was identified by Seoul Police after a man in his 40s was found unconscious in a car park at 10.30am on 27 December, Yonhap news agency cited police as saying.
According to Yonhap, earlier on Wednesday, the actor’s wife informed the police that Lee had left the house and that she had discovered what looked to be a suicide note.
The government was conducting a crackdown, and Lee was being investigated for alleged illegal drug use.
Three times, including for nineteen hours over the weekend, the actor was questioned by the police.
South Korea has extremely strict drug laws, with minimum sentences of six months to maximum sentences of fourteen years in prison for drug-related offenses.
Lee claimed he was tricked into taking drugs by a waitress in a bar, who then tried to blackmail him, Yonhap reported.
Recognized for his part as the wealthy father Park Dong-ik in the 2019 comedy thriller Parasite, Lee shared a Screen Actors Guild Award with the rest of the cast.
