Even though the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit against Labour officials who traveled to the United States to assist for Kamala Harris in the fiercely contested presidential race, the prime minister said on Tuesday that he had “established a good relationship” with Mr. Trump.
Along with allegations of communication between senior Labour operatives and the Harris campaign, the complaint, which was submitted to the independent Federal Election Commission, claimed that the Labour Party members’ volunteerism amounted to “illegal foreign campaign contributions and interference” in order to support Mr. Trump’s Democratic opponent in the US presidential election.
While attending the annual Commonwealth heads of government summit in Samoa, Sir Keir attempted to minimize the controversy and the part played by Labour Party volunteers in the US election.
The prime minister emphasized to reporters during the 28-hour flight that Labour Party members were traveling as volunteers and not on the party’s books.
