After losing to India in the Champions Trophy semi-finals, Australian cricketer Steve Smith announced on Wednesday that he has retired from one-day international play.
The 35-year-old batsman will continue to play Test and T20 internationals after leading the squad when regular captain Pat Cummins was not available.
Smith, who top-scored with 73 in his team’s 264 all out during Australia’s four-wicket loss in Dubai on Tuesday, informed his teammates that he had decided to retire right away.
Smith stated in a press statement from Cricket Australia, “I have loved every minute of it and it has been a great ride.”
Smith, a leg-spinning all-rounder who made his debut against the West Indies in 2010, played in 170 One-Day Internationals and amassed 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28.
