But now that King Charles III has assumed the throne, what should become of these images?
A suggestion that a portrait of the late Queen might be placed in storage to make room for a portrait of the King sparked a debate at the Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon Borough Councils.
The late Queen’s photo “couldn’t be located in an area which is frequented by staff or the public, so it couldn’t be in a reception area or work area,” according to the equality and diversity officer for the council.
What then has happened to the Elizabeth II paintings held by the other councils in Northern Ireland?
To commemorate the start of the King’s reign, public authorities all throughout the UK were able to request for a free framed photograph of him in June.
Councils were therefore forced to make a decision regarding what to do with their Elizabeth II images.
The idea to hang the King’s portrait was accepted at a September committee meeting of the Armagh City, Banbridge, and Craigavon councils.
