After government forces retook the vital Khartoum airport from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Sudanese army leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan declared the capital “free” on Wednesday.
The declaration was made a few days after the presidential palace, which had been occupied by the RSF since the combat began in April 2023, was returned to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Al-Burhan claimed the army had driven RSF fighters from central Khartoum in a televised speech from the palace. He made his first visit inside the palace in almost two years, declaring, “The capital is now free.”
