According to a recent analysis, the death toll from the civil conflict in Sudan is much higher than previously thought.
Khartoum state, where the fighting started last year, has seen almost 61,000 deaths, according to a research by the Sudan Research Group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
Noting that avoidable sickness and malnutrition were the main causes of mortality throughout the Sudan, it stated that 26,000 of these deaths were directly related to the fighting.
Many more people have lost their lives in other parts of the country, particularly in Darfur’s western area, where claims of ethnic cleansing and crimes have been common.
