Given worries about potential civil disturbance, election chicanery, or violence against election workers, security for Tuesday’s election is being stepped up to previously unheard-of levels. The 2024 US presidential campaign has been especially turbulent.
The National Guard has been activated by the states of Oregon, Washington, and Nevada; according to the Pentagon, at least 17 states have put 600 National Guard members on standby in case they are needed.
Security has been strengthened at many of the approximately 100,000 voting places in the United States, and the FBI has established a national election command post in Washington to keep an eye on threats around-the-clock during election week.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, since 2020, 19 states have passed legislation to improve election security.
