Sweetpea, the star of Puppy Bowl 2024 and the tiniest puppy to ever compete in the event, died abruptly months before the event while on her way to the doctor for a check-up, according to USA Today, citing Bosley Place.
Sweetpea, who was born in Tennessee on July 1, 2023, and raised in Georgia, died on November 20, 2023, from a malformed kidney. Jennifer Siegel, the animal director of Bosley’s Place, confirmed with USA Today.
“Sweetpea lived a charming life,” Siegel added. “She was quite loving. Everyone adored Sweetpea. We knew when she arrived that she would be a medical nightmare. We made sure she was well-cared for and had the best life with her.

According to USA Today, Sweetpea was born with hydrocephalus, a neurological disease caused by the accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s chambers.
Siegel also revealed that she had a hole in her heart.
“She came to our rescue on her deathbed,” Siegel explained.
“I began performing medical diagnostics and tests. When she was around four weeks old, we were limited in what we could do, so as she developed, we conducted more and more ultrasounds and echocardiograms; she also had a couple of hospital stays in the ER due to blue baby syndrome, when I tried to wean her off the bottle.”
