In August of last year, Ta’Kiya Young, 21, was suspected of stealing alcohol bottles from a shop and was shot in the chest.
Three months later, her unborn daughter also passed away.
Blendon Township police officer Connor Grubb was charged with murder, involuntary manslaughter, and assault by a grand jury on Tuesday.
He was one of two policemen that went up to Ms. Young’s car and requested that she get out.
The expectant mother is seen in a video of the event, which was made public in September of last year, refusing to get out of the car, twisting the steering wheel, and allegedly driving towards Grubb, who then discharges his rifle through the window.
Nadine, Ms. Young’s grandmother, stated that the police never ought to have drawn his gun when he initially approached her.
She remarked on Tuesday, “He took a lot from us.” It isn’t just. Neither the baby nor she are with us.”
The family, she said, including her granddaughter’s two young sons, had had a tough year: “It’s been agony, it’s been like a whirlwind of hurt and pain.”
The Young family’s attorney, Sean Walton, stated that the law is unambiguous regarding when an officer may use lethal force.
