The picture, which also stars God and Adam and Eve, is billed as an apocalyptic comedy by British director Gilliam, who was born in America.
The 83-year-old Monty Python star and Depp, 60, have previously collaborated on projects, most notably the 1998 Hunter S. Thompson movie adaption of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
This will mark Depp’s second feature picture following the outcome of his well-publicized defamation lawsuit against his former wife Amber Heard in the United States two years prior.
In the French historical drama Jeanne Du Barry, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival last year, Depp portrayed King Louis XV in his final major motion picture role.
A farce in which God chooses to wipe out humanity
Gilliam gained notoriety for creating instantly recognizable animated collages, which were prominently featured in the Monty Python opening titles.
Regarding his latest endeavor, which he discussed with the French cinema publication Première, Gilliam characterized it as “a comedy in which God chooses to destroy humanity.” And Satan is the only one attempting to save us as he needs humans to exist in hell in order to have a job for all of eternity.”
In the film, Gilliam also revealed that Jeff Bridges will play God, who is portrayed as “nature” and is given “animation to bring it to life”.
Gilliam also mentioned Adam Driver and Jason Momoa, however it is unclear what part they would play.
