THARPARKAR: Many girls are being forced to attend males’ schools because there aren’t any girls’ schools in the remote parts of Tharparkar. Many eventually have to drop out as they advance through the grades because of logistical and social issues.
Joyita Kumari, a seventh-grader at the Government Boys High School in Malanhore Vena, is one such student who makes the several-kilometer daily journey to further her education.
She aspires to be an engineer, teacher, or doctor, but many females in Thar do not achieve their goals.
Cultural customs and economical limitations keep females from going to school in many areas. A sizable portion of parents place more importance on housework than their daughters’ education.
