“I am shocked, I am upset, and I am disappointed in the lack of sensitivity that went into this campaign,” stated Hadid, who is partly Palestinian.
The SL72 throwback shoes’ ad campaign made allusion to the 1972 Munich Olympics, where a Palestinian group known as Black September attacked and killed 11 Israeli athletes and a German police officer.
After that, Adidas told AFP that it had pulled Hadid from the campaign and apologized, saying it would “revise” it.
The 27-year-old Hadid has been an outspoken advocate for Palestinians and made a financial donation to aid in relief efforts for the Gaza conflict earlier this year.
In a statement posted on an Instagram story on Monday night, Hadid stated, “I would never knowingly engage with any art or work that is linked to a horrific tragedy of any kind.”
I was unaware of the historical link to the horrific events of 1972 prior to the campaign’s publication.
