ISLAMABAD Three past captains stated that hosting the prestigious one-day international competition will reignite Pakistan’s passion for cricket, which has cricket supporters giddy with anticipation ahead of the Champions Trophy.
The hosts take face New Zealand in Karachi on Wednesday to kick off the tournament, which pits the top eight teams in the sport against each other in the ODI format.
Former batting great Inzamam Ul Haq told Reuters that there was no escape the enthusiasm in the run-up to the event, which would be Pakistan’s first major international competition in almost 30 years.
“Right now everyone is talking about the Champions Trophy, in schools, houses, markets, offices, everywhere,” he stated.
After gunmen assaulted the Sri Lankan cricket team, Pakistan spent over ten years in the wilderness.
