Every year, hundreds of thousands of photographs of child abuse are removed from the Internet by the Internet Watch Foundation.
It now claims that artificial intelligence is making the task considerably more difficult.
Since it seems like we are reaching a tipping point, I find it incredibly chilling. “Jeff” said, a senior analyst at the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) who, in order to conceal his identity at work, goes by a false name.
Jeff and his colleagues reported a 6% rise in AI content over the past six months, dealing with more AI-generated child abuse photos than the previous year.
They see a lot of unsettlingly realistic AI imagery of children being harmed and mistreated.
“We’re getting to the point where even a trained analyst […] would struggle to see whether it was real or not,” Jeff told News, whereas previously we could tell with certainty what an AI image was.
