The 26th Constitutional Amendment, which requires the top court position to be filled three days prior to the incumbent’s retirement, gives the coalition government just over 30 hours to name a new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP).
The new law stipulates that the new appointment must be finalized by October 22 at 12am, in light of CJP Qazi Faez Isa’s expected retirement on October 25, 2024.
The CJP’s term is fixed at three years, or until they reach the retirement age of sixty-five, under the 26th Amendment to the Constitution. Early on Monday morning, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif advised President Asif Ali Zardari to sign the measure into law.
