The Dodgers won the eighth championship in the team’s history after rallying from a five-run deficit to defeat the New York Yankees 7–6 in Game 5 of the Fall Classic.
New York had a 5-0 lead by the fourth inning after Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm went back-to-back in the opening inning. But their most significant flaw in their poor defense would backfire.
Judge lost a straightforward line drive in the fifth inning. At third, Chisholm was unable to manage a short throw. Following that, Gerrit Cole hit an RBI single instead of covering first base on what should have been the third out.
Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman both drove in two runs to knot the game at five as the Dodgers seized the opportunity.
In the sixth, New York took the lead again, but in the eighth, they were given another opportunity. After L.A. loaded the bases and got Tommy Kahnle out, Aaron Boone decided to use closer Luke Weaver. However, Shohei Ohtani loaded the bases again after reaching base on a catcher’s interference after Gavin Lux tied the game with a sac fly. Mookie Betts, the following batter, led the Dodgers 7–6 with a sac fly.
