Northamptonshire police have suspended Mr. Adderley and scheduled a three-day hearing for gross misconduct.
He had previously claimed that the South Atlantic Medal had been a gift from his brother, despite the fact that he had been wearing the medal in a way that suggested it was his own and that he had thus participated in the Falklands battle himself.
In addition to lying about his accomplishments and status in the Royal Navy, Mr. Adderley is also accused of fabricating information in his application to become the chief constable of Northamptonshire police.
The panel was informed that Mr. Adderley had professed to have spent ten years in the navy.
claiming to have been a veteran of the Falklands War, even though he had only been in the military for two years, having barely turned fifteen when the fighting started in 1982.
The Office of the Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (OPFCC), represented by John Beggs KC, declared that it is “risible” for Mr. Adderley to try to justify his “falsehoods” by accusing him of “being lazy and sloppy.”
It is abhorrent for anyone, much less a senior police officer, to claim to have served their country when they were only 15 years old, Mr. Beggs stated.
The assertions made by Mr. Adderley to have fought in the Falklands battle, according to Mr. Beggs, “caused deep offence because we know 255 service people met their deaths in that war.”
