Women’s property rights in Pakistan are now better protected after the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) declared the demeaning practice of Chaddar and Parchi, which denies women their right to inherit, to be both unlawful and un-Islamic.
In resolving a petition, a three-member full bench led by Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed ur Rahman and comprising Justices Khadim M. Shaikh, Dr. Muhammad Anwar, and Ameer Muhammad rendered a decision to this effect.
Syeda Fouzia Jalaal Shah, an Islamabad resident, filed the petition, which attracted public and media attention, against the Federation of Pakistan and a number of government entities, including the President of Pakistan, the Ministry of Law & Justice, provincial governors, and commissions on women’s rights.
