In a significant move, the federal government formed the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) to investigate electronic crimes, replacing the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Cyber Crime Wing.
The federal government made the decision to abolish the Financial Crimes Authority (FIA)’s cybercrime wing, according to a formal notification released by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. This decision was made in the exercise of the authority granted by sections 51 and 29 of the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act, 2016.
The statement read, “The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) shall cease to perform functions as designated investigation agency under the Act, and the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) shall stand established to exercise jurisdiction under the Act [Prevention of Electronic Crime Act, 2016”).”
